Triumph in Taipei: Our Youth Team Shines on the Mats

What an incredible and action-packed weekend we just had. Recently, we packed our gear, rallied the squad, and traveled up to Taipei for one of the most exciting and highly anticipated competitions of the year. As a coach, you always hope your students will go out there, give it their absolute best, and effectively apply what they’ve learned in the gym. But this past weekend, our kids didn’t just meet those expectations—they completely shattered them. I am beyond thrilled to recap an unforgettable weekend of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where our young athletes showcased not just their high-level skills, but their immense heart and dedication.

Dominance in the Gi

Let’s start by talking about the gi divisions. To put it simply: our kids were an absolute force to be reckoned with on the mat. We walked away with an amazing win ratio, securing victories in the vast majority of our matches.

But it wasn't just that they won; it was how they won. Jiu-Jitsu is a complex, physical puzzle, and our youth team brought all the right pieces to solve it. We didn’t rely on just one strategy or muscle our way through brackets. Instead, our competitors displayed a beautifully diverse game. I saw phenomenal stand-up work blending seamless Judo throws with aggressive, well-timed wrestling entries. Once the fights hit the mat, our guard play was dynamic, active, and nearly impassable. To top it all off, we finished matches with a wide variety of submissions. From perfectly executed armbars and tight triangles to slick rear naked chokes, the technical execution in the gi was a coach's dream come true.

Courage and Growth in No-Gi

While the gi competition was a showcase of technical dominance, the no-gi portion of the tournament was a true testament to our team’s courage and competitive spirit. For no-gi, a large number of our athletes made the bold decision to step up in both belt level and age category.

They didn't want the easy path; they wanted to test themselves against older, more experienced opponents. As a coach, this makes me exceptionally proud. Winning medals is always great, but having the bravery to step outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself against tougher odds shows true martial arts character. This willingness to embrace the grind and face adversity head-on is exactly what we strive to build in our academy. Even against larger and higher-ranked opponents, our kids fought with relentless grit. They scrambled hard, defended intelligently, and proved that their technique holds up under serious pressure.

A Well-Rounded Squad

One of my biggest takeaways from the entire weekend was the sheer variety of our team's skill set. Often in youth competitions, you see kids relying on one specific move or attribute, like a quick guard pull or a single favored sweep. Not our squad.

The cross-training we’ve been doing paid massive dividends. Our athletes dictated where the match took place. If they wanted to stand, they controlled the wrestling. If they wanted to play off their backs, their guard retention was elite. It shows that they are becoming true, well-rounded grapplers.

Looking Forward

I want to extend a massive thank you to all the parents, training partners, and supporters who traveled to Taipei and cheered from the sidelines. Your energy fueled the kids every time they stepped onto the mats. This weekend was a massive success, but it is also just a stepping stone. We will take the lessons learned, bring them back to the academy, and continue to evolve.

I am so incredibly proud of every single athlete who competed.
